Xiaomi and Samsung have taken over the number one spot in the list for the top smartphone brands in India, with each grabbing 23.5% of market share. It’s big news for the Chinese brand which has been seen enormous growth over the past few years.
Samsung has traditionally been the top dog when it comes to India, so sharing the limelight with Xiaomi probably won’t please it. As per the IDC, the South Korean firm had a record breaking quarter in Q3 2017, posting 39% sequential growth quarter-on-quarter and 23% year-on-year. Some of its highest selling models include the Galaxy J7 Nxt, Galaxy J7 Max, and Galaxy J2.
These 3 contributed to 60% of Samsung’s volume. Xiaomi has also had a great quarter, tripling its shipments year-on-year and doubling quarter-on-quarter. No prizes for guessing which phone contributed the most to the brand’s success. The Redmi Note 4 managed to become the best-selling smartphone in India again with 4 million units shipped in Q3 2017.
Xiaomi itself recently claimed that it had shipped 9.2 million phones in India in the last quarter. It’s been expanding into the offline sector for the past year, opening its own Mi Home stores and vending via retail outlets. It’ll probably be looking to push Samsung to the number 2 ranking now.
Both Xiaomi and Samsung will have to contend with Lenovo which grabs the third spot, thanks largely to Motorola and an 83% increase in shipments. Vivo and Oppo make up the rest of the top 5. The former actually saw a decline, while the latter grew by 40% sequentially and 81% year-on-year.
Diwali sales in India lead to an impressive 80 million phone shipments in Q3 2017, accounting for 10% of global shipments for the first time ever in a quarter. The figure represents a 40% growth from the previous quarter and 21% growth from the same time last year.
