Apple iOS 9 update brings better battery life, supports Indian languages

iOS 9 is all set to roll out for a range of Apple devices, the latest upgrade from the tech giant bringing a handful of enhancements with it. Owners of the iPhone 4S or newer, the iPad 2 or newer, the iPad mini, and the 5th or 6th generation of the iPod Touch will all be eligible for the update.

The upgrade size is roughly 1.3GB, in line with the company’s promise to deliver smaller updates and give people the option to install them later. This should prove to be a relief for people with limited storage or bandwidth. Users can download iOS 9 by going into Settings, followed by General and finally selecting Software Update.

While iOS 9 is not a complete overhaul of the previous version of the software, it has important changes that should improve the functionality of all the supported Apple products. The brand is promising a longer battery life of up to one hour. That’s in addition to a low power mode which turns off non-essential features in order to grant the device a maximum of 3 more hours of use.

There’s also a new San Francisco font and a News app, replacing the old Newstand one. Passbook has been done away with as well, Apple bringing in its Wallet service instead. Indian users will get new keyboards for Hindi, Hinglish, Gujarati, Telugu and Punjabi. There’s further support for Hindi in the Definition dictionary and the option to switch to the number system of that language.

iOS 9

iOS 9 has gained the ability to learn what a person does in a particular location or time and automatically displays apps according to the pattern. Notifications are sorted with the most recent ones on top, instead of the old system of grouping them by app. Swiping left or right on the home screen will bring up a new search window where Siri suggests contacts and applications based on the frequency of access.

iOS 9 further supports multitasking in iPads now, so consumers can access another app without leaving the one they’re using. They can also resize the applications through Split View.
