Apple iPhone 6s Plus release delayed by supply issues

The Apple iPhone 6s Plus has been hit by supply issues, only a few days after the device went up for pre-orders in several countries around the world. While its smaller counterpart, the iPhone 6s, is still sticking to its September 25 shipping date, the bigger device will be delayed by 3 to 4 weeks for new orders.

The news comes amid claims from the brand that the pre-orders of the Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus have exceeded expectations. They are apparently en-route to beat last year’s record of selling 10 million units within the first weekend. The supply problem hasn’t occurred because of an excess of demand, though.

A new report by 9To5Mac suggests that it’s because of production issues with the backlight hardware of the iPhone 6s Plus. According to them, Japanese supplier Minebea is facing supply constraints and Apple has been forced to allocate more orders to the other provider of the module, Radiant, in order to meet demands.

The rush order will result in production of the hardware to rise by 70%-80% to 4-5 million units, up from the 35%-45% share it possessed earlier. The document by KGI Securities hints that Radiant is more capable of producing the backlight module for the 6s Plus. This is in part because of its long history of providing the same hardware for the iPad mini. The tablet additionally has a 7.9-inch screen, closer to the 5.5-inch display of the new device.

A quick look at the specs of the iPhone 6s Plus:

– OS: iOS 9 platform
– CPU: 64-bit 2GHz dual-core Apple A9
– Display: 5.5-inch, 1080 x 1920p
– RAM: 2GB

However, the issue only affects new orders of the Apple iPhone 6s Plus. Ming-Chi Kuo, a senior KGI Securities analyst, clarified that the brand will indeed have anything from 1.5 million to 2 million models of the handset ready on September 25.
