The Micromax Canvas Spark series of smartphones have sold over a million units according to an announcement by the brand. The record was achieved within 6 months and apparently makes the handsets one of the best-selling 3G phones in India.
The Micromax Canvas Spark was released in April 2015 while the Canvas Spark 2 was launched in September this year. Both were initially sold under the flash sale model via Snapdeal but are now available free of that system. The former supposedly sold 20000 units within 2 minutes during its 1st round of vending.
The Canvas Spark later sold 50000 models in 5 minutes during another flash sale. Thanks to such numbers, it sold 500000 units within 2.5 months and generated Rs 2.5 billion in revenue. Vineet Talreja, the company’s CEO, claims that smartphone penetration in India is currently at 12% and 3G adoption is at 10%.
He thinks this provides an excellent ground for sales of the lineup to grow further. In a statement, Micromax claimed that 3G subscribers total 93 million now, with the user base increasing at a rate of 81% year-on-year. Videos account for the more than half of mobile data consumption.

The popularity of the Canvas Spark and Spark 2 is probably due to the impressive range of specifications both devices boast of at the affordable price of Rs 4999 and Rs 3999, respectively. Sales of such budget handsets is what probably propelled Micromax to land a place in the top 10 handset manufactures across the globe.
The list, compiled by Gartner, stated that Micromax had sold 12.16 million handsets during the 3rd quarter of 2015. The number is double what the brand boasted of during the same period of time last year, when it sold 5.6 million units. It’s the only Indian entry to grab a spot in the rankings.
