A week after its existence was leaked online, the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime was officially launched today and is the company’s first device manufactured in India. In a break from tradition, the handset is also the first to be sold in an open sale across a range of websites immediately upon release.
It’s priced at Rs 6999 and is basically an upgraded version of its predecessor. For Rs 1000 more, consumers will get 16GB of internal storage and 2GB of RAM, up from the previous variant’s 8GB of ROM and 1GB of RAM. All other specifications of the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime remain the same. The phone was released earlier in the year as the Limited Edition in China and as the Enhanced version in Singapore.
The smartphone was constructed in a factory in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. It’s the first facility the brand has opened up in the country in partnership with Foxconn. Xiaomi eventually plans to build all its India devices locally. The Redmi 2 Prime is a safe bet for its first launch, given the success its previous edition enjoyed. The latter should continue to sell well since it still has a respectable set of specs for Rs 5999.
