The Xiaomi Redmi 2 budget smartphone is now available for Rs 5999, down from its initial launch price of Rs 6999. The announcement was expected after teaser posts on the company’s social media pages hinted at the reduction in cost.
The official reason for the Rs 1000 cut has been attributed to ‘lower costs’ since its March release. The handset faces competition from the company’s own Note 4G which retails at Rs 7999, after it got a slash in value too. Singapore is getting the Xiaomi Redmi 2 at a lesser rate as well, with the added release of an enhanced version of the device with 2GB of RAM and 16GB ROM for $179.
The discount on the Redmi 2 also put to bed speculations that the cheaper 2A variant of the phone was going to be launched. Now focus has shifted to the next Redmi Note 2, photos (seen below) of which were leaked by Gizmo China. It might have a 5.5-inch full HD screen, Android Lollipop 5.0, a 3000mAh battery, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front lens.
The Redmi 2 can’t claim such impressive specs, but it has good set of features for the mid-range market segment. It comes with Android KitKat 4.4.4, a 2200mAh battery, 8GB internal memory, a 4.7-inch IPS HD display guarded by AGC Dragontrail Glass, a 64-bit quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8MP rear lens and a 2MP front camera.
