Vodafone announces Double Data offer for prepaid users in Mumbai

Vodafone India has launched a new Double Data scheme for its prepaid users in Mumbai, so customers can now get twice the data they pay for. This effectively results in rates getting cut in half. The brand is probably hoping the initiative will encourage 2G customers to switch to the faster 3G network.

Double Data will be applicable on all internet recharge packs starting from the first week of August. Consumers can access it through 121, the My Vodafone app and the special offers section on the official website. Mumbai is the biggest contributor to the company’s total profits in India, which is likely the reason why the plan has been introduced there first.

The telecom operator is the biggest service provider in the city with a 32% revenue share. The company says 4.8 million out of its base of 8.4 million subscribers in Mumbai now use data, indicating an increase in overall internet consumption by 53%. Vodafone further claims that 82% of its customers have data-enabled handsets, spurred by the accessibility of smartphones in the market currently.

The Double Data scheme comes a day after Airtel announced its rollout of 4G services across the country. Vodafone is still months away from unveiling its own LTE network, having only started trials a few weeks ago in select areas. It will also face competition from Reliance Jio, which plans to begin offering the high speed network in December.

The brand recently released a Vodafone WiFi Connect app for iOS and Android to reduce the load on the increasingly congested cellular network in Delhi and Mumbai. It requires a one-time sign-in and will automatically work when the user is in one of the company’s 100 Wi-Fi zones.
