Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg wishes India a Happy Diwali

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has put up a post wishing everyone in India a Happy Diwali and expressing the regret that he misses being in the country during its famed festival of lights and pollution. Actually we just added the very last bit for all those who refuse to burst fewer crackers this year in spite of the alarming levels of smoke and dust in the air.

Accompanying the post which declares “It’s the start of Diwali, the Festival of Lights – when people light candles and fireworks to signify the victory of good over evil,” is a photo of Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan in Goa at the wedding celebration of Aditya Agarwal. The last mentioned is the current VP of Engineering at Dropbox and an ex-employee of Facebook.

Zuckerberg was in India only last month to to host a Q&A session at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. India has over 130 million Facebook users, making it an important market for the social networking giant. The government is also heavily invested in transforming the nation into an IT superpower, which means it has gained the attention of the biggest names in technology.

This is why Zuckerberg has been seen wooing India over the past year or so. His ambition to get everyone on Facebook still remains strong, and there are no plans to scrap the anti-net neutrality Internet.org (now called Free Basics) platform. He has met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, twice during the past six months over Digital India and other development agendas.

As any powerful, influential personality will tell you, one must balance their efforts towards world domination with philanthropy. Apart from giving $75 million to San Francisco General Hospital, sponsoring free Wi-Fi in several Indian villages and investing in better educational facilities, the young Facebook CEO also donates regularly to various causes across the globe.
