BSNL 4G to hit 14 telecom circles soon

BSNL is all set to launch its 4G platform is 14 telecom circles across India where it has 20MHz of liberalized broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum in the 2500MHz band. The airwaves allow it to provide its services without any licensing obstacles.

To recall, BSNL had first started its 4G network in Chandigarh on an experimental basis. The soft launch was the operator’s way to see which method of rollout would suit its interests namely a revenue sharing model or capex one. The first involves the company providing only passive infrastructure and spectrum, while other aspects like base tower stations (BTS) are taken care of by an outside vendor.

This system works out well for BSNL since it will not have to incur any expenditure and a large part of the investment will have to be borne by the outside party. Note that customers will still be billed by the brand in this setup. On the other hand, the capex model is more expensive as it entails the procurement and integration cost.

BSNL is looking to experiment with both before deciding its final plan. A senior official told PTI that the brand doesn’t have a specific launch date for its 4G services in place, though preparations for it are in full swing. The telecom player is set to install 4G BTS in pre-existing GSM sites which means it won’t have to spend any money on constructing new towers.

As for speed, BSNL had showed off speeds of 35Mbps during the soft launch of its 4G platform in Chandigarh. We’ll have to wait and see what the brand will offer when the service hits commercial availability.
