Bigger screens and videos to drive smartphone trends in 2016 says Micromax

A new Micromax study predicts that 2016 will be the year of large screens as smartphones gradually become the preferred device to watch videos in India. Furthermore, e-commerce portals may flatten out even as its reach expands to newer locations.

The Micromax report thinks the current accessibility of cheap smartphones will continue in India in order to cater to first-time consumers. The entry of domestic and Chinese brands is set to play a key role in the market, although the latter may find it difficult to profit here if the Goods and Service Tax (GST) is enforced in the country.

Inspite of the coming expansion in 4G services in 2016, Micromax claims 3G and 2G customers will continue to stick around for at least a few more years. It also expects the mobile internet ecosystem to increase beyond the current 150 – 200 million user base thanks to digital services for entertainment, healthcare, banking and travel becoming more and more mainstream.

The study cites the simplification of tools and availability of features in a variety of local languages as the main drivers in this growth. As per IANS (via the Times of India), online outlets may see its current rapid rise even out due to a reduction in spending. Additionally, larger screens combined with the spread in data usage will make smartphones the most common way of consuming videos.

This may be why Micromax is planning to launch more phablet phones over the coming year. The manufacturer had announced its attentions at the launch of the Canvas Mega and Canvas Mega 4G back in December 2015. The company’s CEO had claimed that the market segment had grown by 200% over the course of the previous quarter.
