Airtel, Vodafone bring out Aadhar-based e-KYC

Based on a directive issued by the government, Airtel and Vodafone have implemented an Aadhar-based e-KYC (Know Your Customer). You can now walk into either company’s stores with your UID tag and purchase instant network connection for your phone.

Previously, KYC would involve submitting hard copies of documents like residence and ID proof. The verification of the paperwork and activation of the SIM would take up to 2 days on the operator’s end. The government ordered telecoms to switch to e-KYC, which speeds up the process and kicks off services almost instantly.

To register yourself using e-KYC, you will have to submit your biometric details like iris scan or fingerprints at any Point of Sale belonging to the two companies. The details will be verified using your Aadhar card number against the UIDAI database in a matter of a few seconds. Upon receiving confirmation, your connection will be validated immediately.

You can avail this offer for both prepaid and postpaid services. The e-KYC process is completely secure as the retailer at the Point of Sale will also be registered with Aadhar. Airtel has rolled out this system in its stores in Delhi NCR and is planning expansion throughout India in a few days. Vodafone has already launched it all over the country.

The e-KYC aims at faster SIM verification for prospective customers using government-approved biometric systems. It also reduces cost and the amount of paper required for the normal procedure. Other major telecom operators might soon start using the method.
