Aircel launches affordable data packs starting at Rs 9

Aircel has introduced a number of data packs starting from Rs 9 up to Rs 403 in a bid to fuel growth in internet usage among its customers and people who aren’t online. The new plans come nearly two months after the telecom operator launched a free basic internet scheme with a similar intent.

Aircel consumers will now be able to get 100MB of unlimited 2G/3G data for Rs 9, 1GB for Rs 79, 3GB for Rs 249, and 7.5GB for Rs 403. The 1st is valid for 1 day, the 2nd for 10, the 3rd for 15 and the 4th for 30. The network provider has additionally imposed a daily high speed limit of 100MB/day for the Rs 9, Rs 79 and Rs 249 schemes and a 500MB/day limit for the Rs 403 one.

The previously launched Aircel free basic internet scheme granted users download speeds of 64kbps. New subscribers can utilize it free of charge for 3 months, following which they have to pay Rs 150 to continue having access to unlimited data. At the time, online services made up 14% of the operator’s total revenue.

Aircel is looking to raise this figure to 30% within a period of 3 years. It’s also planning to set up approximately 20000 mobile tower sites by the end of 2016 in order to strengthen its 3G network in India. The telecom player claims it’s seen a 75% rise in 3G adopters within its user base, propelled by the reduction in cost of 3G handsets to below Rs 3000.
