1 billion users logged into Facebook on August 24

Over 1 billion people logged into Facebook on August 24, a new landmark for the 11-year old social networking website. While it already has almost 1.5 billion monthly users coming to the site every month, this is the biggest number of visitors in a single day.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to his own Facebook page to announce the achievement, proclaiming it as an important milestone for the tech giant. To drive the point even further home, he discussed how this number converts to 1 in 7 people in the world using the social media site within a 24-hour period.

According to him, Facebook usually talks about such statistics and financials in terms of averages but this one is different, since it’s the first time such a groundbreaking development has occurred in its history. He went to extoll the virtues of the networking website as a way of bringing people together and building communities.

Zuckerberg also posted a video on his page celebrating the achievement. Sadly, it wasn’t made using the Moments app’s new music video abilities, which we feel is a missed opportunity to promote the tool. The roughly 2 minute long film elaborates on the 1 billion figure, trying to make us see the faces behind it and the ways in which Facebook helps in connecting them.

The number is good promotion for the company which has come under fire in India recently over its Internet.org initiative. The zero-rating platform was branded as being against the principles of net neutrality. The DoT in its report on the issue decried Facebook’s role as a gatekeeper that controls which services get featured on its platform for free.
