WhatsApp steers into voice messaging territory with new push-to-talk option

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature which allows users to send out voice messages of unlimited duration to their contacts. This trait is slowly being dished out on all the platforms that the application is available on. While sending out voice files was indeed an option on earlier versions, it featured a time limit and it needed to employ device’s music player to allow users to listen to them. Eliminating both these options from the new version, the voice chat trait on Whatsapp now resembles that of WeChat, Line and other such utilities.

The feature will work with the record button which sits beside the message box. On tapping and holding it, users will be able to record whatever they wish to convey to their contacts. On letting go of the button, the voice message will automatically get sent to the recipient. And if at any point, one feels like aborting the message, a swipe to the left will do the trick.

AllThingsD brought forth this development yesterday, and along with that, it even gave details about the massive scale on which the service is running in the world right now. Jan Koum, the company’s co-founder and CEO told the website that the popular messaging application now enjoys 300 million monthly active users. And these numbers include over 20 million active users from India. For those looking for more numbers to crunch on, the company has revealed that 11 billion messages are sent on a single day through the service.

With the introduction of the new voice chat option on WhatsApp, things have indeed heated up as far as its competition with other similar products in the market is concerned.
