WhatsApp releases desktop apps for Windows and Mac

Utilizing WhatsApp on a desktop has been possible via the company’s Web client for a long time now. The brand has now decided to release Windows and Mac-specific apps in order to cement its dominance across all platforms.

The new Windows and Mac applications work just like WhatsApp Web does. The tool mirrors the interface of the mobile version down to a T, mirroring ongoing conversations and messages. The new additions could prove especially useful for people who don’t want to constantly switch back and forth between their desktop and phone.

The new WhatsApp app is now available for anyone with either Windows 8 and above or Mac OS 10.9 and above. In a blog post, the company states that the application runs natively on a person’s computer, allowing them to have additional support for things like desktop notifications and enhanced keyboard shortcuts which aren’t possible in the regular Web version.

Authenticating the Mac and Windows applications for texting is relatively straightforward. All a user has to do is open the mobile version of WhatsApp, head to the WhatsApp Web menu under Settings, and scan the QR code in the desktop app. The company recommends connecting the smartphone to Wi-Fi as a large amount of data will get shifted in the process.

In related news, WhatsApp is probably going to add video calling to its list of offerings if a new set of rumors turns out to be true. The in-demand function could also be joined by features such as ZIP file sharing, voicemail and call back buttons.

WhatsApp for Windows and Mac is now live and can be downloaded here.
