Videocon Telecom announces Double Data scheme

Videocon Telecom has introduced a new Double Data scheme which will be valid for all the internet packs it offers to its customers by default. Under the terms of the initiative, users can only access the free data during night hours.

In a statement, Videocon Telecom said it hopes the new plan helps it reach its target of increasing data usage by 50% on its network within the next 6 months. The Double Data benefit is applicable for packs starting at Rs 13, which provides 120MB of data, till Rs 251, which offers 3GB. Night hours is defined as the period from midnight to 7 am.

Videocon is not the first telecom company to introduce an after-hours scheme. Airtel had started its own initiative along similar lines, although it only provides a 50% cashback for its consumers rather than giving away data for free. Both brands cite low network utilization at night as the reason for the special focus on those particular hours.

According to Videocon, most of its user base is comprised of young people who are constantly online regardless of the time. It estimates 20% of data access occurs between 12 am and 7 am, a figure which is rising on a monthly basis. Additionally, 17% of its internet consumers guzzle nearly 50% of their pack during the same period of time.

Videocon thinks the Double Data offer will raise the revenue it gets from internet services by almost 25% over the next 6 months. However, it expects the new move will result in realization per GB of data to drop by 20% overall. The player saw a 126% rise in online consumption last year, surging after it upgraded its system to 2.75G EDGE.
