Videocon mimics Airtel and Vodafone, reduces 2G tariffs by 90 percent

Videocon has joined the list of telecom operators in India who have been on a GPRS rate-slashing spree of late. And trudging in the footsteps of such rival carriers, Videocon has trimmed down 2G subscription charges in select regions across the country by almost 90 percent.

The service provider which previously expected customers to shell out 10 paise per 10KB, now requests only 1 paisa for the same. So every time users run out of the stipulated 2G data package that they have subscribed to, they will bounce back to benefiting from the aforementioned rates.

June witnessed Airtel and Vodafone stating their intentions to pull a similar act starting this month. The carriers had claimed that they would be extending these perks only to those residing within the boundaries of Haryana and Punjab, but the network operator in question has added a few more regions to this list by including the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Another operator planning to treat its customers to reduced 2G tariffs is Tata Docomo which went on to put the scheme forth for those on its 3G networks as well. The carrier’s offer kicked off on the first day of this month and it has been tailored around a similar 1 paisa per 10KB plan.

While Tata Docomo deployed a scheme for its 3G users, Airtel had something similar in mind for its 4G consumers. Reducing the charges by 31 percent so as to bring them at par with WCDMA rates, the network provider targeted these plans at cities such as Pune, Bangalore, Chandigarh and Kolkata.

Picking up from where we left, Videocon has promised to make the new data tariffs available during the first week of July, which means that customers can look forward to browsing the web at nominal rates anytime now. At present, we cannot be certain whether the company will be unbiased while rolling out this plan or similar to the offer made by Airtel, the relevant scheme will be concentrated on pre-paid users only.
