The Umi Hammer has arrived in India without any fanfare, now available for Rs 10999 on Flipkart and Amazon. The Chinese manufacturer was set to release the Zero as its debut Indian smartphone, but has been beaten to it with the premature release of the Hammer.
The highlight of the Umi Hammer is supposed to be its indestructible build. The handset has a 4.3mm aviation aluminum alloy frame that houses a polycarbonate back and a 5-inch IPS 720p HD dual glass screen protected by Corning Gorilla glass. Its main 13MP dual-LED flash camera is enclosed within an aluminum socket.
The Hammer contains Android 4.4 KitKat, upgradable to Android 5.0 Lollipop. It’s powered through a 2250mAh battery and a 1.5GHz quad-core MediaTek MTK6732 processor coupled with an ARM Mali-T760 GPU. The device has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal space, which can be expanded up to 64GB via microSD. Selfie-wise, the front lens has a resolution of 3.2MP and Pure Cell noise reduction technology.
A unique feature of the Umi phone is that it allows the user to change the ROM of the device through its Rootjoy software. Once connected to a computer, consumers can download as many ROMs as they want, from MIUI 6 to HTC Sense. The tool also provides for upgrades, backup and app management.

The Umi Hammer will face tough competition from the numerous other Chinese manufacturers in the Indian mid-range market. Its ROM customization sets it apart, since many people would probably like the freedom to try out different ROMs without buying a separate phone for each.
