Throw out household gadgets, bring in those smartphones and tablets

The reign of smartphones and tablets continue, with household gadgets being ditched in favor of such extremely portable devices offering connectivity to the internet. According to a new survey, things like cameras, laptops and gaming consoles are being shown the door thanks to their multitasking replacements.

Not a big surprise, is it? When your phone can click photos as good as those captured through a digital camera, why would you bother with two separate gadgets. The same goes for consoles. With regards to notebooks, manufacturers are building tablets that are more powerful than ever before. If laptops merely serve as portable workstations, why wouldn’t an iPad, Nexus or Surface be able to offer similar service?

In the UK, those having smartphones showed a 20% rise between 2012 and 2013. But it may be the tablet category which struck the most brutal blow to traditional household gadgets, with ownership of the former growing by 125%. Digital cameras and portable gaming units suffered drops of 7% and 18%, respectively. Notebooks and eReaders only enjoyed 4%and 31% higher ownership.

The Times of India seems to feel it is the affordability and easy availability of Android slates which has contributed to this rapidly changing landscape. And we can’t ignore the fact that companies are hell bent on making personal gadgets capable of multitasking to extents we only dreamed of a few years ago. Now you have GPS, a fitness tracker, an HD video camera, a portal to social networks, the web and much more in the palm of your hands!
