MediaTek’s MT6592 true octa-core processor for mobile is here

MediaTek has proudly unveiled its honest-to-goodness octa-core chip going by the model number MT6592. The SoC is being hailed as a ‘true’ 8-core SoC by the company owing to the fact that it improves over competitors like those from Samsung, for example.

If you consider the Exynos 5 Octa based on big.LITTLE architecture (before it was updated recently, that is), it has two quad-core Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A7 processors which switch between each other depending on the task at hand. Meaning all eight cores are not active simultaneously.

On the flip side, MediaTek’s MT6592 has the eight cores, each of which are capable of running at up to 2GHz, working at the same time. The chipset will be seen in smartphones or tablets powered by Android Jelly Bean before the end of this year. Devices running on KitKat 4.4 and using this SoC are scheduled to arrive in 2014.

Which smartphones or tablets will have this octa-core processor?

Intex has already announced that a handset integrating the MT6592 clocked at 1.7GHz will be hitting India soon. The device is expected to have a 6” touchscreen, Jelly Bean 4.2.2, 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB internal memory, dual SIM slots, a 13MP main camera, a 5MP front lens and no name as yet.

Unwired View had reported that Huawei CEO Richard Yu revealed some details on a Glory 4 or Honor 4 smartphone. Whichever moniker the company decides to give it, the inclusion of the octa-core MediaTek processor has been confirmed. Also, it could sport the Emotion UI 2.0 and better specs than that of competitor Xiaomi’s Red Rice.

The highlights of the MT6592 cover support for Ultra HD 4Kx2K H.264 video playback and 16MP cameras. The ARM Mali GPU is part of the package, so is the promise of longer battery life, automatic frame-rate conversion of 24/30fps videos to high-quality 60fps clips and much more.
