Just while Android loyalists around the world are waiting to lay their hands on the Galaxy Nexus handset with Ice Cream Sandwich, Sony Ericsson might be planning to introduce the Android 4.0 update for their latest additions to the Xperia range. This seems considerable since the mobile manufacturer has decided to completely shift its focus on smartphones in the coming year.

According to a report by Engadget, the Netherlands based website All About Phones spotted a post on the Facebook page of the Dutch wing of Sony Ericsson. In the post, the company apparently stated that it is looking forward to introduce updates for all its handsets in the Xperia range which are currently operating on Android 2.3.4 version. Even if there was no direct mention of the Ice Cream Sandwich version, the line did mention about the next Android platform and upgrades in 2012.

Reportedly, Sony Ericsson has reverted to this by saying, “Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us.”

If it all turns out just as desired by Android and Xperia fans, Sony Ericsson may soon adapt to the temperature of this new Ice Cream Sandwich. Any further decisions about official software annoucements are expected to be updated on the official Sony Ericsson blog.
