A recent announcement by Sony Ericsson reveals that the company has been appointed the Official Mobile phone Handset of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. That’s right! The Swedish-Japanese handset maker is all set to play soccer officially.

A spokesman for Sony Ericsson, remarked, “The agreement with FIFA enables Sony Ericsson to partner with one of the world’s most popular sports and adds to the existing Sony Ericsson sponsorship portfolio. Sony Ericsson will apply the knowledge gathered from its continuing successful sponsorship of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, the largest sponsorship of professional women’s sport, to engage with consumers through new and exciting experiences.”

Teaming up with FIFA as the official mobile handset of the 2010 FIFA World Cup will give Sony Ericsson exclusive rights in various categories worldwide. Though Sony Ericsson has been designated as a FIFA World Cup Sponsor, the company hasn’t really divulged in details of its sponsorship plans.

There’s also a buzz that Sony Ericsson is all out to launch some special soccer edition phones to cater to football enthusiasts. One of the most awaited events of the year, we are quite sure the World Cup will add that extra zing to Sony Ericsson’s existing portfolio.
