Smartphones sales exceed features phones’ for the first time ever

The second quarter of 2013 has recorded a 46.5 percent increase in smartphone sales as compared to Q2 2012 and it has also been revealed that these smart gadgets have finally managed to outsell feature handsets. According to the Gartner report, the total mobile phones sales have gone up by 3.6 percent as compared to last year.

The total mobile phone sales amounted to 435 million units, out of which 225 million units were smartphones. Rest of the 210 million units were feature phones which witnessed a decline of 21 percent in sales from this time last year. The aforesaid report has also confirmed that Samsung has continued to be the reigning king in this segment.

Samsung’s sales made up for 31.7 percent of the total sales which was up by 2 percent from last year, while Apple sold 32 million units of its iPhones to record a 10.2 percent increase and claim 14.2 percent of the market share. LG, Lenovo and ZTE took up the third, fourth and fifth position with market shares of 5.1 percent, 4.7 percent and 4.3 percent, respectively.

That Android managed to keep its title as the most preferred mobile OS, doesn’t come as a surprise. And it has even recorded a considerable growth as its market share went up from 64.2 percent in second quarter of 2012 to 79 percent in the second quarter of 2013. Apple follows with 14.2 percent and Microsoft’s Windows Phone has surpassed BlackBerry to take the third position with 3.3 percent share. 2.7 percent of the total smartphone owners have opted for the BlackBerry OS.

The guys over at Gartner have predicted that the total mobile phones sales across the world will hit the 1.82 billion mark in 2013.
