90% of population will own a mobile phone by 2020

If all goes as has been forecast by Ericsson, the smartphone subscription numbers from all over the world will almost double by the time the year 2020 arrives. This will result in a whopping eightfold surge in the mobile data traffic from around the world.

It is expected that we will see 6.1 billion smartphone owners globally by the end of 2020. That number will sound all the more shocking when you’ll fathom that only 2.7 billion people are currently hooked onto to the smartphone craze, as of 2014.

And since there will be an massive increase in the usage of smartphones, the consumption of wireless data will also see a huge rise. Between 2014 and 2020, the usage of mobile data will increase eight times more.

This contradicts an earlier prediction by Ericson which found out that there will be a tenfold growth in that number between 2013 and 2019. The Swedish company has clarified about this difference by saying that it had a higher starting point in 2014.

The boost in data traffic has evidently been blamed on the consumption of videos. This factor is expected to increase its share in the total global mobile traffic to 55 percent in 2020. The same number currently sits at 45 percent in 2014.

Fifth generation wireless Internet is also set to become mainstream come 2020. 5G services will commercially be deployed in most parts of the world. Ericsson has said that 5G is expected to have a faster uptake than 4G, which was again faster than 3G.

This marks quite a big change that is coming our way in the near future, and we can hereby safely infer that smartphones are something the masses are definitely not hesitating to adopt.
