Samsung topmost handset manufacturer in third quarter: comScore report

comScore recently released the results of its latest survey which discovered that one in ten mobile phone users in the U.S. owned an iPhone. The comScore MobiLens service pulled together this report by surveying more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and found that Samsung emerged to be the topmost mobile phone manufacturer with a total market share of 25.5 percent.

This survey covered the three month time period that comprised August, September and October. The second OEM to follow Samsung was LG which claimed 20.6 percent of the market share and in the third position stood Motorola with 13.6 percent share. Apple ranked fourth in the OEM race as it took 10.8 percent of the share and rounding off the top five was RIM’s 6.6 percent market share.

As far as the most used mobile platform goes, Google Android bagged the top spot by spreading over 46.3 percent. Following Android in the second position of the most used mobile platform was Apple which captured 28.1 percent of the smartphone market and RIM came in third with 17.2 percent share. The fourth and fifth places were taken by Microsoft and Symbian with 5.4 percent and 1.6 percent shares, respectively.

According to this comScore study, the number of people using smartphones in the U.S. had increased by 10 percent in the newest survey as compared to the previous three-month time period. About 90 million people in the U.S. possessed smartphones during the three months ending on October.

Other findings of the comScore report are that 71.8 percent users employed text messaging on their mobile phones and 44 percent browsed the web regularly from their handsets.
