Rupee free fall causes Sony India to hike products’ prices

Sony India, the manufacturer of multiple gadgets including Xperia smartphones and tablets, Bravia TVs, Cyber-shot cameras, Vaio laptops and more, has announced that the falling economy of the country has prompted it to introduce a price hike for all of their products. It’s the weakening of rupee that has caused the issues and burdened Sony which ships these devices into India from other nations.

The Times of India who spotted this news on PTI reports that Sunil Nayyar, head of sales of Sony India has confirmed that the necessary steps will be taken shortly. He has also revealed that most of the impact will be absorbed by the company itself and the price hike will be a mild one. It is not likely to overburden potential buyers though.

Also, the period between August and November being the festival season, Sony has pinned its hopes on earning Rs 400 crore as revenue during these months. Back in 2012, the OEM’s earnings at this time of the year amounted to Rs 310 crore, which means it is now aiming for a 30 percent increase in its revenue. The manufacturer is planning to increase its distribution network from 850 to 935 to clock in a 25 percent growth nationally.

In other news, the Japan-based company released the Xperia Z1 only yesterday. The 5-inch phablet shows off a Triluminos touchscreen and employs a powerful 20.7MP camera with G lens and various other sought-after features. It is powered by a quad core processor and binges on the Android Jelly Bean platform.

Other details regarding the price hike have not been given a mention.
