In a bid to promote their newly unveiled Lumia 800 and 710 handsets, Nokia has started offering Wi-Fi services free of cost to smartphone users in London until the end of this year. The services can be enjoyed from today by any smartphone owner regardless of which network they utilize.

As per the Nokia Conversations blog, the company has set up 26 Wi-Fi hotspots across the city and those planning to buy the Nokia Lumia phones, which will retail from November 16 can go online and surf the web as soon as their purchase is done as long as they’re within the said Wi-Fi zone. This initiative has been started in collaboration with independent Wi-Fi provider Spectrum Interactive and the Nokia Maps app will help users track down the nearest hotspot.

John Nichols, Head of Marketing at Nokia UK, elaborated, “Nokia believes you can upgrade everyday moments to make them amazing. Providing free Wi-Fi access to London commuters and visitors does just that. On-the-go access has become an indispensable part of modern life. From tourists finding their way around the capital, to commuters updating Facebook or browsing on the move, we all depend on mobile to share our everyday experiences and enhance our lives. Nokia is proud to sponsor this pilot which we hope will connect people even more easily than before.”

This scheme will provide bandwidth to meet customers’ demands optimally as well as data for determining apt locations. The free services are a part of a bigger strategy by Nokia that involves connecting billions of users to the internet along with offering an apparently cost efficient and reliable web experience across the globe.

According to the blog, just like this free Wi-Fi service Nokia has launched in London, it has plans to offer similar schemes in other countries as well.
