The big news about the Nokia 103 phone is that it’s priced at roughly $21 or €16, exclusive of taxes. Well, that’s certainly some serious redefining of the word ‘low-cost’ now.

Considering the cost of the handset, it’s hardly likely that the Finnish manufacturer will drop into the US or the UK with it. As of now, its launch in Nigeria is on the cards for this quarter of the year itself and the company is positioning it as ‘Nokia’s most affordable mobile phone for first time buyers.’

“Nokia has been progressively lowering the entry barrier to the market while continually increasing the capability of our devices and delivering phones with contemporary fresh designs,” said James Rutherfoord, VP of Nokia West Africa, in a press release posted on IntoMobile.

“Nokia is committed to helping to mobilize the next generation – the next billion and beyond – and ensure they have access to the advantages of mobile technology. With the Nokia 103, Nokia is making mobile connectivity a reality for lower-income consumers,” added Rutherfoord.

Sporting a rugged anti-scratch cover and dust-proof key mat, the device is a very basic one. It works on a BL-5CB 800mAh battery that can apparently last through almost 11 hours of talk time and 27 days of standby time.

The handset works on GSM 900/1800 bands and employs the Series 30 user interface. A 1.36-inch monochrome display colors the front face and essential features like stereo FM radio, a 3.5mm headphone jack and up to 500 phone book entries are supported by it.

Like we’ve already mentioned above, the Nokia 103 price is expected to read at approximately €16 or $21, not including the applicable taxes and all.
