Mysterious iPhone 4 combustion on Australian flight

Combusted iPhone 4

For some reason, an iPhone 4 supposedly decided to express its rage when it was about to disembark from a Sydney bound REX flight. After the plane landed in the largest city of Australia, the otherwise cool gadget started sending out a red glow, and was also seen ‘emitting a significant amount of dense smoke’.

This entire episode started on a Regional Express flight ZL319 which took off from Lismore and was destined to land in Sydney. Just when the otherwise regular journey was about to come to an end with the plane landing, a certain passenger’s Apple smartphone, identified as the iPhone 4, started behaving in an unusual manner that seemed out of line. As described earlier, it was seen letting out smoke along with a red glow.

Reportedly, the combustion was taken care of by flight attendants, ‘in accordance with the company standard safety procedures’. The misbehaving handset was apparently calmed down, but the process in which it was carried out was not described by the airline. Nonetheless, the passengers, crew, and others involved were unharmed and alighted safely.

After the live action subsided and things cooled down, the matter was reported to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority as well. Both these authorities are expected to look into the matter to investigate the accident, and provide further details.

According to the release embedded by BGR in its report, the damaged device in question, an Apple iPhone 4, has been entrusted to the ATSB for further analysis.
