Kayak discontinues support for its BlackBerry travel app

The popular Kayak app which has helped many a traveler at some point or the other, will no longer be available for BlackBerry. The company that has developed apps on most of today’s popular mobile platforms, has issued a statement of apology to RIM handset owners about this discontinuation.

Although the Kayak application will not be available at the BlackBerry App World, it would continue to provide its services through the Android and iOS versions. MobileBurn dug up this tidbit about Kayak, which conveyed that the existing BlackBerry platform is ‘not working out to be a great channel for consumer mobile applications.’

According to the company which began operations eight years ago, it had distributed BlackBerry smartphones to the whole engineering team for facilitating easier communication between members. However, with the passage of time and advancements in technology, the team started switching over to other, more favorable mobile platforms and Kayak feels that its prospective consumer base is doing the same.

The main reason cited for ceasing support for the BlackBerry application seems to be the current weak position held by RIM in the smartphone market. The travel search engine apparently does not find it justifiable to continue with its app which is touted to not bring in more users and result in mounted costs.

Although Kayak will be not be introducing any new features, updates or bug fixes to its BlackBerry app, it maintains that RIM helped it by quite a bit in the initial stages and still remains a commendable messaging platform.
