Idea Cellular is the latest network provider that has jumped on the data rates slashing bandwagon. The operator has reduced charges for 2G connections by as much as 90 percent, while 3G users can expect 30 percent reductions. The offer will be applicable from November 15 and will last for a period of 6 months.
The carrier provides 2G networks in 22 circles across India and people in all of these regions can enjoy new tariff rates. The current charge stands at 2 paisa per 10KB, which will come down to 0.2 paisa for the same amount of data. Similarly, in its 10 3G circles, Idea has reduced the cost so as to help its subscribers save up to 30 percent. The current 3G rate is 3 paisa per 10KB.
No doubt, the new rates have been introduced in order to attract more and more people towards mobile internet. And it makes sense, considering that more and more Indians are adopting smartphones or internet-enabled handheld devices. Also, the competition in the market may have prompted the company to take this step.
Earlier this month, Vodafone announced that it is slashing the internet rates by 80 percent and introducing Pay as you Go plans, helping customers to not be tied to a single plan. This is particularly good for people who do not have similar data consumption every month. It is the second time when Vodafone has slashed its data tariffs. Airtel, Tata Docomo, Videocon and more have also decreased their data charges.
The new prices for Idea 2G and 3G data connections will go live on November 15.
