Nokia unveils Here Auto featuring cloud-enhanced navigation system

Nokia has taken its Here mapping service to the next level by introducing the complete Connected Driving solution which proffers cloud-based in-car navigation. The technology will be flaunted to the masses at the International Moto Show which is slated to be held in Frankfurt on September 10, Nokia claimed.

Featuring Here Auto, the offering speaks of delivering accurate maps in real-time along with voice-guided navigation, even without a data connection. It promises to display appropriate routes, while the company also gave the example of a helicopter view when on highway, zoomed-in interface when in the city and so on.

Not only can drivers reap the benefits of traffic updates and avoid blocked streets, they can also request recommendations for eateries, parking spots, fuel stations and more. This reminds us that the Traffic product which has been tweaked to show off enhanced data including weather and congested roads, thanks to the new Halo engine.

Then there’s also Here Auto Companion which is mobile and web app saving drivers the hassle of punching in frequently-used routes every time they take the wheel, by syncing such places with the devices. The service also facilitates other activities like checking fuel levels and tire pressure. While the mapping app has just begun rolling out to Windows Phone users besides Nokia’s products, the Companion utility will be provided even to Android devices.

In-car Navigation

The smartphone maker has vouched to push Here Auto together with the companion app to the fore in the months to come and it has partnered with Magenti Marelli to materialize this objective. Apart from making this facility available in almost a hundred countries, the Finnish company will also be providing an SDK (software development kit) for developers to contribute relevant apps.
