Google Maps 6.0 for Android has recently been released for smartphones as well as tablets powered by the OS. The new edition brings in support for indoor locations at various places.

With the addition of this feature, the maps will now allow users to navigate through the insides of airports, malls, and other such locations, in a more effective manner. Currently, the function encompasses select locations, but is expected to include more such places soon. A blue dot representing users, moves along with them. Besides showing the direction they are headed in, it also indicates their current floor number.

“When you’re inside an airport, shopping mall, retail store, or other public space, Google Maps 6.0 for Android brings the freestanding map directory to the palm of your hands — helping you determine where you are, what floor you’re on, and where to go indoors. For example, in this busy travel season, you can use Google Maps 6.0 to help you find your way around airports,” posted Chikai Ohazama, Product Management Director, on the official Google Mobile blog.

In addition to this, the latest version also sees new functions like easier switching between features in a toolbar, a new attribute called Places, and more. The toolbar is now equipped with a drop down menu for various aspects that are present through the service. The Places appendage gives access to the most popular or most searched spots in the user’s surrounding location.

Google Maps 6.0 for Android for smartphones and tablets can now be downloaded free of cost from the Android Market.
