Freedom 251 world’s cheapest smartphone can be pre-ordered tomorrow

Ringing Bells has launched the Freedom 251 in India, touting it as the country’s cheapest smartphone due to its Rs 251 price tag. The device could even be regarded as the most affordable phone on a worldwide scale considering it amounts to just over $4.

The Ringing Bells Freedom 251 could be a game changer in the affordable handset segment in India. The nation recently overtook the US as the second biggest smartphone market in the globe but there’s still a sizable section of the population which hasn’t made the transition from feature phones. Fixing such a low figure to the phone might just tip them over the edge.

Ringing Bells has not revealed how it’s vending the phone at such a low cost. The government has likely played a big role in this, with the company even mentioning that the device had been developed with the backing of the government and was in line with the Make in India initiative. The concept is similar to Datawind’s dirt-cheap Aakash tablet.

Have a look at the specs of the Ringing Bells Freedom 251:

The 3G-ready Freedom 251 has been equipped with a number of pre-loaded apps which are clearly aimed at the masses. The list includes applications like Swachh Bharat, Women Safety, WhatsApp, Facebook, Fisherman and Farmer. As for its specifications, Ringing Bells has blessed it with a pretty decent set of features which are commonplace among entry-level handsets.
