Freedom 251 cheapest smartphone ever to cost less than Rs 500

Ringing Bells has announced it will launch the Freedom 251 on February 17 in India, asserting the handset will be sold at below Rs 500. This would make it the top contender for the title of cheapest smartphone in India and possibly across the world given its approximately $7 price tag.

The India-based Ringing Bells is a new player in the phone market, having entered the fray only last year. It’s unveiling the new Freedom 251 with the backing of the Indian government. The device has been developed in line with the Make in India initiative and the Prime Minister’s goal to connect all Indians.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer has been silent on the exact value and specs of the Freedom 251. It’ll reveal the exact details at its launch. Its last big announcement took place earlier this month when it had pulled the covers off the Smart101. The highlight of that smartphone was its 4G connectivity at the ultra-cheap cost of Rs 2999.

The Smart101 otherwise contains common entry-level features like 8GB of internal storage, microSD card support up to 32GB, 1GB of RAM, a 2800mAh battery, a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, and a 5-inch IPS qHD (480 x 960p) display. It also houses an 8MP camera with LED flash alongside a 3.2MP selfie snapper.

The government’s involvement in the making of the new Ringing Bells phone is reminiscent of Datawind’s affordable Aakash tablet which was launched back in 2011. The device had been released keeping in mind the needs of students. The same company in collaboration with Reliance had announced what it called the world’s cheapest smartphone at Rs 999 last year.

Stay tuned for more on the specifications, cost and availability of the Ringing Bells Freedom 251 when it gets launched tomorrow.
