Delhi Congress wants telcos to be fined, consumers compensated for call drops

The Delhi Congress has voiced its concern over call drops, with members of the party meeting TRAI chairman RS Sharma on September 8 to discuss the issue. In view of the worsening situation in the capital, it is asking for telecom operators to be fined heavily when the problem exceeds a certain limit.

Ajay Maken, the unit chief of the Delhi Congress, and Sharmistha Mukherjee, the DPCC spokesperson, submitted a memorandum on the problem to TRAI. In the document, it asked the regulatory body to conduct a weekly review and analysis of call drop frequency among all network providers. The companies should be heavily penalized on a monthly basis if they are found to go beyond a limit of 2%.

According to the Congress, TRAI should set up a compulsory compensation system where the operators are made to pay customers for flouting the norms. The amount would be based on the percentage of call drops incurred by the company. The party thinks this would be an effective solution for the problem and will provide relief to consumers.

The Congress party went on to blame civic bodies in Delhi for their lack of planning. It asserted that in spite of the possible health risk, thousands of illegal mobile towers have been allowed to be raised near schools, residential areas and hospitals. They demanded a National Tower policy be put into place to prevent such constructions from occurring.

As per PTI, TRAI had conducted an audit of the service quality being offered by companies back in July. The authority discovered that most operators were not meeting the required benchmarks. Reliance was the biggest offender with a call drop rate of 17.29%. The top five was rounded off by Airtel, Aircel, Vodafone and Idea.
