Credit Suisse says Reliance Jio 4G speeds peaked at 70mbps

A new report by Credit Suisse claims that the 4G download speeds of Reliance Jio have peaked at over 70mbps during its beta-test phase. The high-speed network managed to deliver rates of 15-30mbps on average.

The 4G connectivity was tested on-field in urban and rural areas by Credit Suisse Research Analysts Sunil Tirumalai and Chunky Shah. They think the download speeds provided by Reliance Jio were impressive but will fall when the telecom operator adds more people to the network after its official launch, which is expected to take place in December.

Tirumalai and Shah think Reliance Jio’s urban coverage is on par with its rivals but did not do as well when it came to rural regions. They went on to compare the company with Airtel, claiming the latter’s LTE offering could only deliver speeds of up to 10-20mbps, while its 3G network posted results of around 2mbps on average and 7mbps at its peak.

As per PTI, the 70mbps speed delivered by Reliance could allow people to download a Bollywood movie within 30 seconds. Even at rates of 15-30mbps the film could be ready within 3 minutes. The Credit Suisse analysts apparently had no call drops occurring while they were in Mumbai, but proceeded to lose the signal 3 to 4 times when they ventured to village roads.

The researchers also said they experienced seamless calls between Reliance Jio and other service providers. They are of the opinion that the former will pose a strong threat to incumbents. As for the rural network, Credit Suisse thinks the brand will use the sub-1GHz spectrum for those areas and could enter into roaming agreements with other operators until their coverage improves.
