RIM has added a touch of luxury to its range of BlackBerry smartphones with the announcement of the BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981. It’s a fresh dip into engineered luxury and performance, says Porsche Design and RIM who’ve collaborated over this new phone.

The handset is sculpted with an edgy form factor and an overall striking new design. The exterior is made up of a forged stainless steel frame and the rear is covered with hand-wrapped leather. It also boasts of a sculpted QWERTY keyboard and a clear touch display.

“Since 1972 Porsche Design has presented milestone products with iconic style, and the P’9981 smartphone from BlackBerry will be our next landmark,” believes Juergen Gessler, CEO Porsche Design Group. “The pure and distinctive design, coupled with authentic materials and an emphasis on the manufacturing process, perfectly match our philosophy and complement the Porsche Design product assortment.”

The phone operates on the latest BlackBerry 7 operating system and gives access to the BlackBerry App World 3.0. The user interface is designed to be exclusive and marked by the Porsche Design branding.

Other than this, the smartphone is embedded with a 1.2GHz processor and comes with 8GB of user memory. However, the external memory is expandable to a maximum of 32GB with a microSD card. On the connectivity front, this handset offers options like Wi-Fi and NFC.

The BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 smartphone is set to hit stores later this year. The price details have not been revealed yet.
