Apple runner-up in mobile OS wars as per comScore MobiLens report

So it’s time to get updated on the latest market trends in the U.S mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending April 2011. According to the comScore MobiLens service report, Samsung ranks first in the league of handset manufacturers with a market share of 24.5%, while Google Android seems to be the forerunner with 36.4% as far as smartphone platforms go.

The analysis involved Americans in the age group 13 and above who made use of mobile devices. Samsung took the lead as the top OEM with 24.5% among U.S. mobile subscribers. LG followed next with a 20.9% share and Motorola took away 15.6% share. As reported, Apple stood at number four with 8.3% of the share of subscribers while RIM made itself to the top five with an 8.2% share.

Approximately 74.6 million people in the U.S operated smartphones during the three months ending in April 2011. Google Android reached the peak with 36.4% of U.S. smartphone subscribers while Apple managed to secure the second spot with 26 % of the market. RIM grabbed 25.7% and stood third by leading Microsoft and Palm that secured 6.7% and 2.6% respectively.

The month of April saw 68.8% of U.S. mobile subscribers using the text messaging feature on their mobile devices. 39.1% of users employed browsers, while 37.8% are cited to have downloaded apps. Social networking sites were accessed by 28%, while games were played by 26.2% of mobile users and 18% listened to music.

Samsung and Android seem to dominate the US mobile phone market during these three months. Whether this growth will sustain itself is something that is going to offer room for speculation till the next report drops by.
