Amazon.com downtime leads to $5 million loss: report

Amazon.com faced an outage similar to the one faced by Google a few days back. However, it appears that the online shopping outlet had gone down for approximately 45 minutes, whereas the search giant’s products were back on track within 5 minutes.

At least that’s what the folks over at Venture Beat have said, even though there are a number of reports suggesting varying timings. While some say that the e-commerce website conked off for roughly 15 minutes, there are others outlining 40 minutes as the outage span. At the time, the website displayed a message admitting the issue, accompanied by images of three books, each apologizing for the inconvenience (take a look at the picture below).

Amazon Outage

The aforementioned post has stated that according to the Puget Sound Business Journal, the e-commerce website must have witnessed around $4.72 million loss in sales within 40 minutes into the downtime. This figure was deduced bearing in mind the company’s average per minute revenue of $117,882. But the damage done could’ve been far worse than this, considering that the portal crashed during peak hours.

Those residing in the US and Canada who tried to access the website were the ones that were affected. From what Gigacom found out, the e-retailer’s websites from other countries continued to function without any hiccups, while the portals of companies owned by Amazon such as Zappos and Diapers.com were running just fine.

Although Google may have gone down for 5 minutes, its losses amounted to $545,000, which is much more as compared to the Amazon.com tragedy.
