ADATA HD720 ultra-durable HDD launched in India

The ADATA HD720 has been launched in India today, a rugged external hard drive that is supposed to be dust-tight, waterproof and shock resistant. The device is the latest addition to the company’s series of durable HDD’s and comes in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB versions.

The company says the ADATA HD720 has passed the severe IEC/EN 60529 IP68 test. This means the gadget can survive up to 120 minutes under water at a depth of 2 meters. It also means dust cannot enter the HDD, so no separate case is required to protect it.

The Taiwan-based ADATA claims the HD720 has surpassed the MIL-STD-810G 516.6 crash test by enduring a fall of 1.8 meters, the test only requiring the device to be dropped at a height of 1.2 meters. It measures 129.4 x 97.9 x 20.2mm and weighs 211g (500GB) or 223g (1/2TB).

The HD720 is made up of three layers. The external cover is made up of elastic silicone, the second is a plastic shock resistant structure and the innermost one consists of cushioned mounting on either side of the main unit. All three combined provide shock absorption to a large degree.

The ADATA device comes with G Shock Sensor protection which helps protect data in case of any accidents. The feature starts up when a severe shock affects it. A red light starts flashing and continues to do so until the aberration has passed. A blue light will glow once normal operations have resumed.

The blue illumination also flashes when transferring data and the red one will turn on in case there’s a disk error. The ADATA HD720 has a USB 3.0 cable that can be wrapped around the HDD through grooves on the exterior casing. It comes in black, blue and green colors.
