Govt approves sharing of all future and current spectrum

In a move that should come as a relief to telecom operators, the government has allowed the sharing of all bandwidth, including traded spectrum. Similar rules will apply to new bands which get allocated in the future.

According to the norms given out by the DoT, network providers can now sell the right to use radiowave frequencies to another player. The original owners are permitted to utilize the bandwidth as well. The guidelines specify that all access spectrum, which are airwaves used for broadcasting wireless signals to handsets, are sharable provided both licensees have spectrum in the same band.

Additionally, distribution of bandwidth is only permitted between two telecom companies within the same network circle. PTI reports the new rules will aid in the optimum usage of airwaves, cut down on call drops and improve the quality of calls. The DoT thinks this will come about as a brand with a lesser amount of consumers in a circle could share it with a bigger operator with more subscribers.

The regulations go on to state that if bands such as the 700MHz one are added to the next spectrum auction, sharing will be applicable in that frequency as well. Right now, 2G services are available through 900MHz and 1800MHz, CDMA via 800MHz, 3G by means of 2100MHz and 4G through 2300MHz.

With the help of technological advancements, providers are now considering the utilization of the 1800MHz and 800MHz bands for 4G and 900MHz for 3G. The DoT clarified that in cases where the company holds administratively allotted spectrum, it will only be allowed to share the band if they pay a one-time charge.
