6th generation iPhone unveiled with iOS 6, Lightning, officially called iPhone 5

Apple’s 6th generation iPhone, namely the iPhone 5, launch should not be much of a surprise for those keeping track of the smartphone. The device certainly runs on the iOS 6 platform and it aims at delivering better battery life with the A6 chip.

After a number of rumors, it has finally turned out to be true; the handset indeed packs in a taller and enhanced 4-inch Retina display. Speaking of its form factor that was also under speculation, the device is wrapped in a fresh 7.6mm anodized aluminum sheath that’s said to be 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S. Also, the body is crafted with glass inlays and diamond cut chamfered edges. From the company’s point of view, it is apparently the thinnest smartphone across the globe.

iPhone 5 Launch

“iPhone 5 is the most beautiful consumer device that we’ve ever created,” commented Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “We’ve packed an amazing amount of innovation and advanced technology into a thin and light, jewel-like device with a stunning 4-inch Retina display, blazing fast A6 chip, ultrafast wireless, even longer battery life; and we think customers are going to love it.”

Powered by an all-new A6 chip, Apple’s new baby comes with an 8MP iSight camera that’s 25 percent smaller than the one seen in the earlier iPhone. The sapphire crystal lens included within the camera is said to be thinner and durable with aims to provide much clearer images. What’s more, users will be able to capture panoramic shots of up to 28MP by simply panning the camera across a landscape. Other enhanced features include image stabilization, video face detection and the ability to take stills while recording clips.

New Apple Smartphone

The multimedia capabilities of the phone would be incomplete if we do not mention the fresh Face Time HD front-facing camera that lets users conduct face-to-face chats, capture self-portraits and record clips in 720p. Customers can take advantage of iCloud’s Shared Photo Streams to share content with family and friends. Moving on to another talked about highlight, the 19-pin dock connector has been dubbed as Lightning and it is said to be smaller, ‘smarter’ and more durable than the earlier 30-pin port.

Apple’s 6th generation iPhone price in the US stands at $199 for the 16GB version, $299 for the 32GB variant and $399 for the 64GB one. The iPhone 5 release date for the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK is scheduled for September 21. Pre-orders will begin on September 14 and the handset will be available via the company’s online store and retail outlets as well as through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and select authorized resellers.
