Windows 8.1 to be free WP8 update, public preview on June 26

Microsoft has once again spoken about the Blue, we mean Windows 8.1, disclosing further details in the process. An announcement was made today at the JP Morgan Technology, Media & Telecom Conference held in Boston, wherein Tami Reller who is the company’s CFO, said that the software is a free update for W8 users and it will be found on the relevant app store.

It wasn’t that long ago when a pre-release version of this OS known as Build 9364 had gone live through some of the file sharing sites. This edition had then been seen endorsing the inclusion of relatively larger and smaller Live Tiles than those found on W8. It broadcasted a number of alterations made to the platform, simultaneously rendering a quick peek at Internet Explorer 11 on its UI.

The bumped up OS received recognition last week along with WRT, after being a part of multiple rumors for quite some time. A few days following this confirmation, certain rumors had HTC crafting two slates which may be running on the latter platform. The speculations that were made spoke of a 7-inch and a 12-inch slate, which may be launched sometime next quarter.

Rumor has it that the former tablet houses a full HD touch display, whereas the latter has been bundled with a screen spurting visuals at a resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels. Since there is no confirmed word from the Taiwan-based manufacturer as of now, we don’t plan on taking this piece of news seriously until some concrete details head our way.

Build 9364

Earlier this year, the company had also revealed some tidbit concerning an update for the OS’ mobile version. According to estimations, this edition too was to carry Blue as the suffix placed after WP. Since we still await validation in this field, let’s leave this tale to be narrated on a later date.

Coming back to the Windows 8.1, Reller has pointed towards the direction of the update’s forthcoming public preview which is to be held on June 26 at the Build developer conference in San Francisco. This, she says, will be made available for W8 as well as WRT. She also promised to share a lot more over the weeks to come. So watch this space.
