There is a new alternative for people who desire WiFi facilities in their phones but don’t actually want to purchase a WiFi-enabled phone. According to Mobilewhack, KDDI Corp has recently developed a microSD card which features a wireless LAN function. This card can offer on the spot WiFi access to any phone that arrives with microSD support.
The dimensions of the microSD card are 11 x 16 x 0.7mm. This microSD card facilitates a faster Internet connection in mobile phones.
KDDI has displayed two different cards – one manufactured by Mitsumi Electric Co. Ltd. and one by Renesas Technology Corp. These cards utilize different wireless hardware. However, they are each IEEE802.11 b&g compliant. The area of the antenna of each of these cards is approximately one third of the microSD card.
These cards can be used in the non-smartphones that do not possess built-in WiFi. Besides phones, this card will also work on laptops and other gadgets that can benefit from a microSD card and a WiFi connection.
There is no information about the pricing, availability or even storage capacities of the microSD cards.
