AVG update identifies iTunes as a virus

Recently, there have been reports that AVG antivirus software is identifying iTunes files as a virus. AVG, Apple and other forums have received a lot of complaints from users experiencing this problem.

According to I4U, AVG users receive a warning message that iTunes.dll and iTunesRegistry.dll are infected with the Trojan horse Small.BOG virus. Apparently, this virus is non-existent. AVG is an antivirus solution offered by AVG Technologies which is known for its high virus detection rate. AVG’s website doesn’t include this identifier on its website and a quick Google search also doesn’t yield any positive result.

Additionally, it is difficult to believe that AVG would make such a mistake for a program like iTunes which is very common. Hence it is quite likely that some disgruntled AVG employee is playing a prank.

It is advised not to quarantine the iTunes files, as iTunes will not run after the files have been ‘cleaned’ and it cannot be fixed by a reinstall either.

AVG has issued a fix but users may need to reinstall iTunes. A fix can be found on the Apple Forums.
