VLC for Windows 8 achieves success on Kickstarter, additional goals revealed

A Kickstarter project aimed at developing VLC for Windows 8 has successfully been funded, and the makers of this software have now released additional goals that it would be achieving thanks to the bonus amount that’s being pumped in right now. With a £40,000 goal on mind, the project was started by VideoLAN on November 29, and it was on December 23 that it finally reached the amount. It now has three days to go until its stint on the crowd-funding website comes to an end.

The VLC for Windows 8 Kickstarter project aims at building a whole new fully featured native app which will entirely be open source. It will apparently be able to play users’ files, streams and optical media. Although currently the software is available to download for the desktop version of Microsoft’s latest operating system – and that too, only for Intel-based PCs – the new version looks to make it a part of the Metro user interface, as well as providing support for Window RT-based tablets and Windows Phone handsets.

The additional goals that will be integrated through the bonus funding it is receiving right now include support for camera input. With this, users will be able to record anything of their choice through connected cameras, and stream it live for others to see. Moreover, DLNA client and server integration and Smartglass support will also be added to it apart from incorporation with locally attached devices for media playback and synchronization.

Software

For the native software, the developers are aiming to include out-of-the box compatibility for DVDs, VCDs and unencrypted Blu-Rays. Features from the current release such as the advanced equalizer, video filters and support for subtitles will be retained by the new edition. VideoLAN has also announced that it will be lobbying to get the application listed as a fully-compliant app for the Windows Store. This will help it reach more users, and provide a consistent installation and update experience.

Hardware

The VLC for Windows 8 Kickstarter page is live now, and those interested in the project can still pledge an amount for it. Different gifts have been announced by its makers for those who donate particular amounts of money.
