One of many things that most Android fanatics wish for is undoubtedly the latest OS update for their existing handsets. While Samsung Intercept users are not getting Gingerbread as yet, Virgin Mobile is rolling out an Android 2.2 update for the phone, reports Android Community.

Users will soon start receiving text messages stating the availability of the software update from Android 2.1 or Eclair to Android 2.2 or Froyo. The actual upgrade process is said to take up approximately 5 to 15 minutes for completion.

Owners of the phone need not worry about losing exchange contacts, text messages, alarm settings, e-mail accounts and installed apps as they will backed up and restored. The data saved on the memory card won’t be affected, while playlists, speed dial numbers, folders, and widgets may be deleted during the update.

The new-fangled flavor of the OS will include improvements like enhanced support for Exchange Active Sync, Bluetooth device and Bluetooth Voice dialing. It will also proffer the ability to store apps on the external memory card as well as better overall performance.
