Micromax Canvas A smartphone listed online, not worth the update

An updated version of the Micromax Canvas A1 going by the model number AQ4502, has been spotted online for a price of Rs 6039. If truth be told, it serves as nothing more than a reminder of Google’s pitiable attempt to exercise tighter control over its mobile operating system through Android One.

Everyone thought Google meant to back up the Android One ecosystem with quick updates to the latest versions of its OS. But this has not been the case to date. Well, at least the new Micromax Canvas A1 comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box. Micromax either intended to roll out the phone quietly or is still planning a grand launch of the device.

The Canvas A1 has appeared online through eBay India and has not got so much as a passing mention by Micromax, though it has been slyly listed officially. Don’t worry even if you have the AQ4501. An update to Lollipop should have already made its way into your smartphone. We’ve given the older handset a spin and checked the ‘Poor battery life’ box.

Unfortunately, the Canvas A1 AQ4502 has not got a bigger battery and sticks with a 1700mAh one. The only improvement, if you want to call it that, is the internal memory. There’s 8GB of ROM inside instead of 4GB. The actual space available to users is 5.5GB now versus 2.1GB in the exiting model. A microSD card slot is present for adding 32GB of additional hoarding room.

New Micromax Canvas A1 AQ4502 specifications:

– 4.5-inch 854 x 480p resolution touchscreen
– 1.3GHz quad core processor w/ Mali 400MP2 GPU
– Android Lollipop v5.1 OS
– 1GB RAM, 8GB internal memory, 32GB microSD card support
– 5MP main camera, 2MP front-facing lens
– Dual SIM card slots, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS
– 1700mAh battery
