Thumbplay Music crosses half million mobile app downloads

Thumbplay Music has been in news for releasing several attributes over the months. It has been made available for Apple, Android and BlackBerry smartphones. This cloud-based streaming music service has seemingly allured numerous users in the US with more than half a million downloads.

Thumbplay has revealed some key usage data such as about 70 percent of the Thumbplay music users are male. Furthermore, smartphone users contribute to about 90 percent of downloads. Taking in account June 1 to October 1, the top position in usage ranking by platform is grabbed by Apple, followed by BlackBerry and Android. The top five devices playing the Thumbplay Music begin with the iPhone, the BlackBerry 8530 takes the second position, then on iPod Touch, Motorola Droid and BlackBerry 8520.

Evan Schwartz, CEO and Co-Founder of Thumbplay said, “Having more than 500,000 downloads under our belts at this early stage is a testament to the desire for people to have anytime, anywhere access to an unlimited music catalog. In addition to our focus on mobile, we are bringing the same great music experience to their living rooms with the launch of Thumbplay Music on connected TVs in early 2011.”

The Thumbplay Music ropes in features like unlimited, on-demand access, favorite artist import/iTunes playlist, Genie for music discovery, online and offline access and more. The music service offers compatibility with both PC and Mac.

According to eMarketer, the number of US mobile music listeners is expected to grow more than double by 2014. While a study by Yankee Group says that the number of smartphone users will quadruple to 160 million by 2013. So, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Thumbplay Music exhibit higher download figures in the years to come.
